Backpacking Packing Guide: Capsule Wardrobe

Packing is always a nightmare for me. Not because I have a tonne of clothes, but because I want to take everything I own every time because I can't think of anything worse than being away and thinking, 'Oh God, if only I had my flowery pink bralet with me... this entire look won't work now!!!' Last summer I literally took ALL of my summer clothes to Orlando when I went to work at Walt Disney World but I was going away for three months then AND I'd paid for an extra suitcase. This time I was only going away for six weeks and I had only a backpack to put all of my things in.

So I got to work thinking, how many pairs of shorts do I need? How many going-out outfits might I want to choose from? How many T-shirts is too many T-shirts? This is what I settled on...

*This was the state of my bed after I had finally chosen all of my clothes. This is NOT a lot of clothes to me... I began to be concerned...*

So I settled on eight T-shirts (two not shown)...

Three pairs of denim shorts (one not shown) and two pairs of jeans, one blue and one peach...

Four tops for going-out which could be dressed up with skirts and heels or down with jeans and flats...

Four going-out skirts, two midi and two mini...

Three going out dresses, one specifically to be worn with heels, the others can be worn with flats for daytime or heels for night-time...

Four bikinis...

Two pyjama T-shirts, four comfy shorts (for pyjamas or casual days one not shown), one pair of joggers, one hoodie and a pair of sleep-socks...

This is how I packed all of my things so that they didn't take up too much space.

I rolled everything into tight roles and then packed them into separate plastic bags depending on the category of clothes. So I had one plastic bag for going-out clothes, one for pyjamas and slouchy clothes, and one for my casual t-shirts, jeans and shorts. Then I also packed 14 days worth of knickers and socks and 5 bras into a fourth plastic bag. Packing things into plastic bags makes things much easier in terms of finding stuff inside your backpack and it makes it a lot quicker when its time to pack your things back away.

I also took one pair of gladiator sandals, one pair of running trainers, one pair of flip-flops, one pair of wedges and one pair of wedged trainers.

Here are the lessons I learned about packing for a backpacking-style trip in North America:
1) Pack two pairs of denim shorts (for when one goes loose after you've worn them for a few days) and one pair of jeans (if you're travelling cross country in the States the weather can be unpredictable... Yosemite and San Francisco were cold and New York can be at some times of the year)
2) Pack two different pyjama sets
3) Don't pack more than seven pairs of knickers and socks (every campsite and hostel worth going to has a laundry room and any more will just make a mess in your bag)
4) Take a pair of warm-ish jogging bottoms and a hoodie (if things get cold at night these clothes are comfy enough to sleep in. And they're great to wear on laundry day when all of your nice things need washing.)
5) You only really need one bikini. Choose your favorite and buy another while you're there if you need to. When you're bust is as big as mine, supportive underwired bikinis take up a LOT of space in your pack.
6) You MUST have a pair of flip-flops. They'll act as slippers and are great for wearing in the nasty showers which you find on some campsites or in some hostels. Unless you like standing in other people's hair, ants and veruca germs.
7) Depending on how often you like going out DEFINITELY take a pair of heels or high wedges. I took mine and I ended up wearing them loads. I had friends that didn't take heels and spent the whole time moaning about how much they wish they had. They take up a lot of space and weight, but they're 100% worth it.
8) Again, depending on how much you like to go out, take a few different options of night-out clothes. When you're in a different culture people dress differently for going out and you don't want to feel unexpectedly bizarre in the club. Also, different states require different looks... in San Antonio I wore a checked cowboy style shirt, denim hotpants and heels. In Vegas I wore a purple bodycon dress and heels. In Memphis I wore a mini bodycon skirt, patterned vest blouse and gladiator sandals.
9) Pack a spare T-shirt, knickers, socks and pyjama set into your hand-luggage for just in case your bag gets delayed or lost! This happened to a friend of mine and she had nothing with her. Whooops.

So there you have it! In hindsight I probably could have taken I couple of kilos worth of weight back out of my backpack if I'd known what I know now, and I hope that next time I go travelling like this I remember to read this blog post. It can be really hard for me not to get too over-excited with packing, but considering this was my first time backpacking I don't think I did too badly.

What would you take backpacking? Or more to the point, what wouldn't you leave home without? How many night-out options would you take? I think I could have cut down on these BIG TIME. But it was nice having options!

Backpacking Packing Guide: Capsule Cosmetics Collection

When I decided to go backpacking, my friends and family pretty much all said the same thing, 'You can't take your entire makeup collection you know'. I confidently replied that I'd have no problem compressing my collection into a capsule makeup bag. No problem whatsoever. Then I looked at my train case... Oh dear.

*The image which sparked fear in my cosmetics-obsessed mind pre-travel*

Ok, don't panic, I thought. You can do this. You need two 'looks'; one for daytime and one for night-time. Keep it simple. Less is more. I began applying the bare minimum makeup face that I would feel comfortable wearing out shopping or whatever... I know it looks like a lot, but here's what I came up with.

*A mattifying primer by LOreal, Maybelline's BB Cream, my Royal&Langnickel foundation brush, 24hour Maybelline concealer, Ecotools contour brush, benefit CORALista blush, Nars Orgasm Illuminator, benefit BrowZings, Ecotools fluff brush, Urban Decay Naked Palette, benefit They're Real mascara, Revlon Peach Parfait Lip Butter*

The most important thing was to appear dewy but not sweaty. Hence the mattifying primer. Plus I wanted a natural look so the BB cream was light enough to give this look. Revlon's Lip Butters are so beautiful and hydrating, plus the Peach Parfait colour matches my CORALista blush perfectly. Coral colours always look fresher and more natural. The Nars Orgasm Illuminator kept the look dewy also. I used the colour 'Virgin' to brighten my eyes without making them look too 'done'. And this is the natural, fresh, daytime face I came up with:

I was happy with this look. NEXT I wanted the kind of look which I could wear on a night out. Something a little more obvious... snazzier. So I'd need a brighter lip, rosier cheeks and a smoky eye. Thanks to my Naked Palette I didn't need to include any more eye shadow. However, I knew I'd need eyeliner, blush and lipstick. Here's what I grabbed for this look.

*Everything is the same as above until my LOreal True Match face powder, benefit HOOLA bronzer, Lumiere Mauvelous mineral blusher, NO7 Deepest Red lipgloss, Urban Decay Primer Potion, InColour Fabuliner and MAC lipstick in Sin*

I wanted my evening look to be a lot more matte than my daytime one with a lot more contour in the cheekbones. I used Virgin by Urban Decay in the corners of my eyes, Gunmetal from two thirds of the lid out and Creep in the crease and outer corner, and dragged a little into the lower lash line. Obviously I slicked on some eyeliner and piled on the mascara. Here's what it looked like:

Now, I know I should have stopped at this point. But I started fiddling around with the makeup I already had in the capsule collection and had to add just a couple more things in order to create a third look. This third look is a more versatile look which I thought could be easily transferable from day to night without looking too overdone during the day or too underdone at night. These are the products I used...

*As you can see, I only really added the brown InColour Fabuliner... I also added benefit's POREfessional and my Burt's Bees lipbalm. See, I was REALLY well-behaved realistically!*

And this is the look I came up with using the above products:

*I figured this would be cute for a nice lunch out or an early gig or beach party. I used coral-ly colours, a relatively dewy base and a gold-brown based eye with Urban Decay's Half-Baked, Buck and Smog.*

And that was it! I decided I did not need any more make-up than this. If I was going on a night out, I layered a second painting of BB cream on for slightly heavier coverage and did the same with blusher and mascara too. I was able to play more with my Naked palette than ever before as the colours inside were the only eye shadows I had. In times of desperation needs must!

*My entire capsule cosmetics collection... And these were my absolute essentials.*

*I set my tools out separately. This was VERY hard having to choose just four brushes! And my eyelash curlers had to stay at home as they just wouldn't fit in the bag :(*

I was really quite proud of myself! If I wasn't so into makeup, I could quite easily have taken just my BB Cream, BrowZings, one blusher, mascara and lipbalm. But you know what I'm like! It was actually kind of fun trying to create so many different looks out of such a bare collection while I was away. Not that I'd rush to do it again in a hurry. I'm currently rolling around in all of my beloved cosmetics and I refuse to be parted with them again for the foreseeable future. Its all I can do to prevent myself from putting it all on at once in fact... *Clown-face warning*

Anyway, have you ever needed to compress your cosmetics collection into JUST ONE BAG for an entire 6 week vacation??? What would be your essentials? What are your tips for transferring your look from day to night with the smallest amount of extra products?

Backpacking Packing Guide: Capsule Toiletry Collection

Let me tell you, when it comes to packing, I have a PROBLEM. I've always been a 'heavy' packer. In fact, last summer, both suitcases I took to the USA with me were overweight... I don't remember how much by, but the luggage allowance was 23kg per bag, so I was carrying OVER 46kg. As if that wasn't bad enough, on the way home, I checked in three items of luggage. The first two were 23kg each and the third was overweight, once again.

I don't know what's wrong with me, I've just always wanted to take a variety of options abroad with me. Plus, I'm really into cosmetics and toiletries and they are naturally very heavy to carry in a suitcase, so I guess that's why I've always been so bad at travelling light. Imagine my horror when I realized that 'backpacking' isn't just the name for what young people do when they're travelling the world, but it actually means that you carry a backpack as your luggage. Just one.

After my initial shock, I decided to man up and comprise my toiletries into one small capsule collection. Here is what I came up with...

*Wide-Tooth Comb, Dove Spray Antiperspirant Deodorant, 2 Razors, Contact Lenz Holder, Neutrogena SPF15 Moisturiser, Liz Earle Toner, Synergi Contact Lenz Solution, Head&Shoulders 2-in-1 Shampoo and Conditioner, Frizz Ease Hair Mousse, Electric Toothbrush, Boots Cotton Wool Pads, Wet Ones Wet Wipes, Johnson's Moisturising Cleansing Wipes, So Hooked on Carmella Perfume by Benefit, Nivea Sun Lotion SPF 20, Dove Roll-On Antiperspirant Deodorant, Acuvue Contact Lenses, Oral B Floss, Colgate Total Toothpast... PHEW*

Now, I'm sure this still looks like a lot to you, but for me, this was the bare minimum, my absolute necessities. I felt like I couldn't do without any of these products. Like, how could I get by without my toner??? Or what would happen if I didn't have my hair mousse to hand??? I dread to think how my teeth would rot without the use of floss.

In hindsight, having returned from my trip, I have now realized that many of these products are luxuries. Sure it was nice to have them, but they weighed down my case a tonne and took up loads of un-necessary space. Also, it took me ten minutes longer to shower and repack my bag than it did for everyone else which is a real pain if you're wanting to grab the first few toasted marshmallows from the campfire!

So what do I NOW think is totally and completely vital for backpackers? Here's my simple list:

1) Comb or hair brush
2) Roll-on antiperspirant (lasts MUCH longer than spray on!)
3) Razor
4) Sun lotion which can double up as moisturiser (SPF30 AT LEAST... getting sunburnt is agony and NOT fun when you're away from home... I had to learn the hard way in Los Angeles...)
5) 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner
6) Wet wipes (for just in case the showers look like the kind of place you'd feel dirtier getting out of than you would getting into. Also good for removing make-up if your skin isn't too sensitive.)
7) Contact lenses and solution
8) Toothbrush and toothpaste

See, simples. Some of you would still take even less, but these were the things I felt were genuine vitals rather than just things I like. When you're travelling no-one cares that your curls aren't defined, or you don't smell like vanilla and coconut eau de parfum. Even with over-packing the toiletries, I managed somehow to compact them all into a couple of bags. Obviously, I just packed my wipes and cotton pads directly into my case as they were easy to squish inside shoes and smaller pockets.

*You can even catch a peek of my cosmetics capsule in the top right corner of the picture... I'll be writing about my collection very soon so keep watch.*

So there you have it: How a Beauty Girl Capsulizes Her Toiletry Collection. Have you ever been backpacking before? What would you consider your absolute essentials? What should I have left at home?
